The
Moon looked very three‑dimensional in the early
morning hours of Aug. 28 during the lunar eclipse,
caused by dark plains at the upper right contrasting
with the brighter edge, making it look like a round
ball illuminated from the side. That effect is common
during a lunar eclipse, but it was especially striking
Tuesday morning–perhaps because, as far as lunar eclipses
go, this one was relatively bright. The orange color
is from sunlight refracting through the Earth’s atmosphere
and bending into Earth’s shadow.
