Q:
What happens when you’re born again and, unfortunately,
keep committing the same sins?
Sometimes it’s hard to stop
looking at porn, fornication
and cussing. I have prayed.
A:
This is a brave question, and more common than people
care to admit. Paul asked the
Romans, “Do you think lightly
of the riches of His kindness,
forbearance and patience, not
knowing that the kindness of
God leads us to repentance,”
(Rom 2:4). The design of God’s
kindness is to lead us to repentance.
So I don’t believe people are
educated in regard to just how
good God really is.
It
is not enough to know that His
kindness leads, but that it
is meant to lead us personally
and individually. Our lives
were never intended to be driven
like animals, but led like rational
human beings. Hosea wrote, “I
led them with cords of love,
and I became to them One who
lifts the yoke; and I bent down
and fed them,” (Hos 11:14).
God is still willing to feed
the souls of people today, if
they will open the Bible and
devour His word. This is how
we become changed by the renewing
of our minds. (See Rom 12:2.)
Isaiah
said we should, “Seek from the
book of the Lord and read,”
(Isa 34:16). Thus we avoid being
squeezed into the world’s mold.
“The
grace of God teaches, educates,
trains and disciplines us to
deny ungodliness and worldly
desires, and to live rightly,”
(Titus 2:11‑12). Accepting
God’s riches at Christ’s expense
has a life changing effect on
people. I personally think hell,
sin and the blood of Jesus ought
to be mentioned from more pulpits;
along with grace, love and acceptance
so we can experience God’s grace,
and our new eternal life in
Christ to the utmost. What good
is half the truth when the whole
truth is what makes people free?
(See John 8:32.) People are
sinners who need to be saved.
Is that supposed to be a big
secret?
Once
we are born again, the goal
is no longer to stop sinning.
The real goal is to grow in
the knowledge and love of our
new Lord, Jesus.
It’s
as though you’ve been eating
from a garbage can your whole
life. Experiencing Jesus every
moment of every day is like
eating in a fancy restaurant.
Who wants to eat trash after
that? Do you?
“Now
this is eternal life: that they
may know You, the only true
God, and Jesus Christ whom You
have sent,” (John 17:3). The
law of God is like a mirror
that reveals our sinful filth.
The law is good, but when you
welcomed Jesus into your heart,
He cleaned you up. You are no
longer under the law of sin
and death. Today, it is about
Him living His life through
you brother.
