Kerr Cultural Center to feature Tina Malia

Singer/songwriter Tina Malia will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at ASU Kerr Cultural Center, 6110 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale.

Malia has been compared to such legendary singers as Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan and Loreena McKennitt, and has toured the world with her own group.

She and her four piece ensemble perform a blend of original music inspired by sacred chant, folk, soul and world music styles.

Dance group sets auditions

AZDance Group is conducting its last set of auditions for the 2007‑08 season.

Positions are for the professional division, junior or trainee members and children’s Christmas company.

Dancers must have dance experience for all positions.

Junior/Trainee Company members and professionals will audition from1:30 to 4 p.m Aug. 5.

Children’s Christmas Company and other interested Junior/Trainee Company members will audition from 1:30‑4 p.m. Aug. 25.                                                                                    

Callbacks for professionals and Junior/Trainee Company dancers will be from 1‑4 p.m. Aug. 26.

The audition fee is $15.

Auditions will be at Dynamic Motion Dance Academy at 41st Drive and Anthem Way in Anthem.

Az Dance Classic set for Scottsdale

Preparations are underway for the annual Arizona Dance Classic which takes place Aug. 2‑5 at the Radisson, Ft. McDowell in Scottsdale.

 This year’s event features world class dance competitions in ballroom, country and swing.

This is the second year the ballroom competition will be featured at the ADC  which started as a country and swing dance competition. Organizers Sam and Mona Arvidson wanted to feature all types of dance styles and added ballroom to last year’s roster.

Julia Gorchakova and Emmanual Pierre‑Antoine will judge the competition and perform at the dinner show on Aug. 4.

In addition to the Aug. 2 ballroom competition, there are contests in country couples, line and swing dance taking place during the four‑day event. More than 50 hours of workshops are offered for those who want to learn a new dance or refine their technique.

Each evening  DJs will play a mix of music designed to encourage social dancing among visitors and participants..

Dancers are expected from all parts of  the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan attending the classic, as well as dancers and dance enthusiasts from the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

The Arizona Dance Classic is open to the public.

Admission prices range from $15 for an evening to $185 for all activities.

Fashion show set for el Pedregal

It’s about time to start thinking about the annual rite of passage called “Back to School.”

Each year, as the big day draws near, moms and kids fret over the latest must‑have wardrobe.

This year el Pedregal Shops and Dining at the Boulders in North Scottsdale will sponsor a back to school fashion show to give the public a preview as to what the well‑dressed student will be sporting this year.

The event will take place from 9‑11 a.m. Aug. 4 with music, non‑alcoholic tropical drinks and the fashion show.

Entertainment will be provided by steel drum performer Sean Michael Mireau from 9‑11 a.m. and the fashion show will take place beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Non‑Alcoholic Tropical Drinks will be at the Bakery Café; clothing is provided by Caribbean Kids; and makeup, hair and nails will be done by Salon Mila.

There will be an assortment of activities for children.

El Pedregal is at 34505 N. Scottsdale Rd., at the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Carefree Highway in Scottsdale.

Home movie day slated for Scottsdale

iMemories Home Movie Day, a free event for the public, will be from 9 a.m.‑5 p.m. Aug. 11.

Visitors to the studio will be able to screen portions of their own home movies on authentic 8 mm, Super 8 and 16 mm projectors.

Experts will also be on hand to clean and inspect old movie reels. Bring in your dusty canisters and find out what’s on the reels.

Prizes will be awarded to the most unusual or sentimental film.

Arts Council accepting entrants

The Arts Council of the North Valley is accepting entrants for its fourth annual juried Festival of Fine Art on Jan. 12‑13, 2008  in Anthem.

The event features more than50 Arizona artists, representing a variety of media and styles including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, metal and wood and will take place at Outlets at Anthem at the northwest corner of Interstate17 and Anthem Way at Anthem.

Dance group needs dancers

AZDance Group, a  professional contemporary ballet, jazz and modern dance company under the direction of Kenda Newbury, is looking for trained high school dance students to fill six spots in its 2007 Community Educational Outreach Program.

Last season three students were chosen from the Boulder Creek High School dance department.

All dancers must be enrolled in high school, take dance classes at the high school, maintain good grades, have transportation, be committed to dance and attend all rehearsals and performances.

Dancers are chosen by a selection/invitation process only. Those interested should send a letter with three references, including a letter from your high school dance instructor, to AZDance Group, 3722 W. Denali Dr., Anthem, AZ 85086.

A member of the selection committee will then observe the student during a dance class or performance.

High school students receive valuable experience working with a professional dance company, an opportunity not always available to many students.

Jazz in Arizona Inc. will feature Dennis Rowland and The Jazz Experience from 7‑10 p.m. Aug. 4 at Kierland Commons, 15210 N. Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale.

Jazz in AZ is a nonprofit community arts organization dedicated to encouraging the local performance and appreciation of jazz music, considered by many to be America’s great original art form.

Founded in 1977, Jazz in AZ has many  members, including business and professional people, musicians, educators, students and listeners.

The focus is to help jazz thrive in Arizona and the Southwest by sponsoring live performances, by encouraging jazz education through scholarships and through the camaraderie of other jazz lovers.
