Falcons sweep 4‑way meet
Prep Roundup
by Jason Stone

CCUSD – Cactus Shadows track coach Patty Egan suggested her teams had a little more depth than she expected before the season. That continued to be true April 5 when the Falcons’ boys and girls each swept a four‑way meet against Coconino, Notre Dame and Phoenix Christian.

Led by eight first‑place finishes for the boys, the Falcons scored 116 points, to blow away Coconino (61), Notre Dame (55.5) and Phoenix Christian (24.5).

The girls used five first‑place showings to narrowly beat Coconino 82.5‑76. Notre Dame was third at 61.5 and Phoenix Christian came in last (19).

Mike Pope was a double winner for the boys, taking first in the long jump (19 feet, 7 inches) and triple jump (40 feet, 7 inches). Austin Bailey took first in the 100 meters (11.44 seconds), while Matt Juris was first in the 400 (58.24 seconds).

Other winners for the Falcons boys were Will Bisbee in the 300 hurdles (45.94), Steven Albera in the pole vault (11‑0), Morgan Boisson in the shot put (45‑10) and Eric Gorraiz in the discus (133‑0).

For Cactus Shadows’ girls team, Lara Kilgore won two events–the shot put (26‑9) and discus (82‑1). Other winners included Natalie Omundson (800, 2:29), Tina Razo (high jump, 4‑8) and Danielle Gonzales (pole vault, 6‑6).

In other action last week, Cactus Shadows’ distance team turned in a handful of personal bests April 7 at the Scottsdale Running Company Distance Classic at Desert Mountain High School. (See below.)

The rest of the team went to the Casa Grande Invitational where six athletes placed in eight events. Bailey qualified for state in both the 100 and 200. Pope finished second in the long jump and set the school record in the triple jump at 41‑0 despite finishing third at the meet.

Cactus Shadows will next be on the road at Greenway on April 12 for a three‑way meet.

O’Connor runner snares school record in 800

DVUSD – School records fell faster than new car values last week as Sandra Day O’Connor runners shattered the record book at two separate meets.

With most of the team competing at the April 7 SRC Distance Classic, runners Camille Olson, Steven Cox and Josh Waldvogel each turned in school‑best marks.

Olson set the record in the 800 with a time of 2:18, a mark good enough to qualify for state. The time was also the fastest in 5A‑II so far this season. The boys team then picked up two school records when Steven Cox finished the 2‑mile run at 10:28 and Josh Waldvogel finished in 4:44 in the mile. Olson also ran 5:12 in the mile and ranks second in the state. Alleina Eisenhauer qualified for state in the 800 at the meet. Spencer Morgan and Lindsay Prescott traveled to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in California, and each came home with his and her best time ever. Morgan turned in a time of 1:56.3 in the 800, the best time in the state at any level this year. Prescott broke her own school record in the 3,200 with a time of 10:53, the best time in 5A‑II this season.
