DVUSD
– It didn’t take long for the Boulder Creek girls tennis team
to make history–one year to be exact.
The
Jaguars beat Mountain Ridge 6‑3 April 6 to clinch the
5A Northwest Region championship.
After
beating Kingman April 4, the Jaguars were tied with Mountain
Ridge going into their season‑ending match. Boulder Creek
won five of the six singles matches to earn the big win.
“I
felt comfortable that we would win at No. 1 and No. 2 singles
going in as Vanessa Green and Hannah Townsend haven’t lost in
region play,” coach Chuck Narvin said. “What was impressive,
and who really won the match for the Jags, was the exciting
singles victories of Daishawna Matthews, Kalyn Schmidt and Megan
Flittie.”
Matthews
beat Sam Waterman 7‑5, 6‑4; Schmidt won over Lauren
Ruiz 6‑4, 6‑4; and Flittie squeezed out a three‑set
tiebreaker to earn her win. In No. 1 doubles, Green and Townsend
teamed for a win.
The
wins improved Boulder Creek’s record as a team to 13‑1
entering this week’s Northwest Region singles and doubles tournament
at Phoenix Tennis Center. Green and Townsend were expected to
be the top seeds at the tournament, which finishes April 12.
Jaguars
finish boys regular
season 6‑8
DVUSD
– Boulder Creek’s boys team lost to Mountain Ridge 8‑1
April 6 to finish the regular season with a 6‑8 record.
Kyle
Kelly earned the Jaguars’ only win over Mountain Ridge, winning
his singles match over Jeff McMickell in a third‑set tiebreaker.
“The
boys varsity showed some great improvement over last year and
very easily could have finished the season with a winning record
with some close 5‑4 losses,” Narvin said.
