Cave Creek issues drought warning

CAVE CREEK – With the Valley in an extended drought, the Town of Cave Creek is trying to be proactive by advising area residents to conserve water.

Last week, the town installed six signs on roadsides urging residents to voluntarily conserve water until further notice.

According to Mike Rigney, assistant utility manager for Cave Creek, the signs will be up “pretty permanently” to inform citizens of drought and other utility alerts that may arise.

“The main intent of the signs is to let them know we’re in drought conditions and they should conserve water in any way they can,” Rigney said. “The signs are to communicate to the public any problems in the system, if we have a power outage or a system failure of some sort.”

Rigney noted the alert is not yet on the town’s Web site but will be soon.

“Just in such an extreme drought condition, we want (the alert) right in their face,” Rigney stated. “Until we get some other system in place for letting people know about utility conditions, we’ll use the signs.”

He went onto explain that Cave Creek is putting together a set of guidelines residents can follow to reduce drought conditions, and the town is also forming a water advisory committee to help deal with drought issues.

“We plan to do a lot more on community education,” Rigney said.
